These are the books I'm currently reading. I use the term 'reading' quite loosely. My intentions are good but my best effort so far is 75 pages of one book, 18 of another and the rest may as well be hot off the press! And these are my recent additions.
I confess - I've always been a flippant reader. If the book doesn't grab me in the first 20 pages I rarely finish it.
So why do we pick up certain books and not others?
Personally, I'm drawn to emerging writers and in recent times short stories. I've just devoured and loved Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro, Robert Drewe's The Rip and a good chunk of Tim Winton's The Turning. There are three short story collections in this batch so it's looking promising. I'm hoping they'll provide some inspiration and understanding of the form, for my own short story writing in coming months.
Another is set in Vietnam - a longed for travel destination. The vivid descriptions are as close as I'll get for a little while yet. Don't you just love that books can do that - transport you to another place.
What are you reading?
